Three bikers kill courier firm owner

Call him out of his office, batter him with helmet

A 40-year-old courier company owner was beaten to death with a helmet by three men outside his office in Connaught Place late on Tuesday night.

Police said they have identified the suspects and efforts are on to arrest them.They refused to disclose their identities citing hindrance in the investigation process.

No clear motive behind the murder has emerged so far. A senior police officer said enmity is the most possible cause, but things would be certain only after the culprits are arrested and questioned.

Police are probing into the role of some of his former employees in the murder. He had recently dismissed from service a couple of them for poor performance.

Victim Biju Varghese is a native of Kerala’s Kottayam district and had been running a courier company by the name Capital Express Courier in CP’s Shankar Market for eight years.

His lived with his wife and children in Mayur Vihar’s Chilla village. His family had left for Kerala a couple of days ago to attend a family function.The victim was about to join them soon.

They have been informed and are believed to be on their way back to the city.The murder was reported around 11.30 pm on Tuesday outside Varghese’s office barely a few hundred metres from Barakhamba police station.

“The murder was witnessed by Varghese’s two employees John and Vijender. The two serve as field boys with the company. They rushed out of their office upon hearing quarrels. They found Varghese being thrashed by three men,” said the officer.

John tried to intervene, but he was pushed away and threatened. One of the assailants then snatched Varghese’s helmet from his hand and repeatedly assaulted him on his head with it. The assault led to Varghese collapsing and the assailants fled on a motorcycle.

A PCR van arrived at the spot within minutes of the incident, but they could only find a bleeding Varghese at the spot. He was rushed to Lady Hardinge Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

John and Vijender later told police that the victim had ordered dinner from a nearby restaurant and was set to leave office when one of the assailants lured him out on the pretext that someone known to him wanted to borrow his motorcycle.The eyewitnesses said they could identify the suspects if paraded before them.
