A 32-year-old salesman was killed when a portion of a garments shop he worked at collapsed on Monday.

A few vendors outside the shop were lucky as they managed to escape on hearing the rumbling sound prior to the collapse.

Victim Jamshed was a resident of south Delhi’s Okhla. He worked at the shop in the busy Community Centre Market at New Friends Colony.

Jamshed’s childhood friend Nishant told Deccan Herald that most buildings in the market were in a dilapidated state.

A police officer said the building was very old and appeared to have been an obvious danger to people and property in and around it.

The accident took place around 9.30 pm. People inside the shop suddenly heard the sound of the building collapsing and rushed out.

“Jamshed also rushed out, but a large portion of the building collapsed on his leg, and he fell on the ground. He could not escape after that as he was buried under the rubble in no time,” Nishant said quoting the eyewitnesses.

He said a couple of youths selling momos outside the garments shop also sustained injuries, but they were minor wounds.

While police said they were initially informed of a few people being trapped under the rubble, they said there was no report of anyone injured in the incident. The fire department was informed, but the locals managed to pull Jamshed out of the rubble and rush him to a nearby hospital. He was already declared dead by then. Police said he died of severe injuries on the head.

A case of causing death by negligence and endangering life or personal safety of others has been registered with New Friends Colony.

Police said they are probing whose negligence led to the death.
