Of unplanned vacations and random trips

Clicking dreams

Everyone has a bucket list. A bucket full of wishes to fulfil, experiences to gain, places to travel and passions to accomplish. Asim Patel, a business corporate who also calls himself an “exceptional entrepreneur”, curated his five-day exhibition titled ‘A Bucketful of Smiles’ at the India Habitat Centre, recently.

The exhibition encapsulated, in perfect frames, Patel’s 20 years of travelling and clicking away his dreams since childhood. A collection of perfectly timed shots of landscapes, innocent smiles, sunsets, and charming portraits, “A Bucketful of Smiles” was “like the bucket list of any child who grew up in a middle class family, watching National Geographic and Discovery channel,” says Patel.

A man of high spirits and jovial mindset, Patel has an interesting story behind each of his photographs. An alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata, Patel was always passionate about photography, capturing landscapes and “Cloud porn”, as he puts it.

“These photographs are a part of an unconscious mind, of unplanned vacations and random trips. For me ticking away my bucket list was like a part of my life. It’s not about going to USA, Australia or Ladakh for travelling, it’s about doing what you want to do...” says Patel.

Meanwhile, the artist reserved a section of his photographs for the Nepal Relief Fund. Sectioned under the hashtag ‘#DontStopBelieving’, Patel displayed a series of photographs that he clicked on his visit to Nepal, the proceeds of which will be donated to relief camps for the victims of the devastating Nepal earthquake.

One feels the excellence in the quality of the photographs. While he tags his works for as much as Rs 12,000, he feels that the quality of the photographs must have an everlasting impact on the viewer. “It took me two days to bring out the quality of these photographs. While I passionately capture the exact moment, with just the right kind of lighting, I can justify my photography only by further polishing my creativity,” he tells Metrolife.

In a generation of small screens and Instagrams, the photographer feels that a good quality output must be the utmost priority for any artist. “Just like the different flavours in a paapri chat tempts people from all age groups, so are these small screens which amount to paapri chat, 20,000 times a day! Even though I don’t belong to the Instagram generation, I am very fond of it. The instant gratification of images which draws multiple likes in a matter of a few hours is delightful...” he rejoices.

An exhibition which was way too different from other conventional photo exhibitions, ‘A Bucketful of Smiles’ justifiably drew a lot of smiles from all the visitors.
