Last Updated 27 May 2015, 20:48 IST

A banquet hall waiter was killed when a gun was “accidentally” fired by his colleague in north Delhi’s Bharat Nagar during the early hours of Wednesday.

The suspect, Ram Dayal, has claimed that the gun, pointed towards the victim at the time of the incident, went off while he was playing with it. The police, however, said they are not ruling out foul play in the death and are investigating all possibilities.

The single-barrel gun belongs to a security guard Jitender (45). He fled from the crime spot after informing the banquet hall owner about the incident. He continues to abscond even as the police are gathering information on him from the placement agency he was hired from. All CCTV footage from the banquet hall has been seized to analyze the sequence of events. A senior police officer said they are thoroughly investigating the role of each person who was in the banquet hall at that time.

The police received a call about the incident from one of the employees at the Gujranwala Banquet Hall in Model Town at around 3 am on Wednesday. The victim Kailash was found lying in a pool of blood. He had sustained a single gunshot wound to his head. The body was sent to a mortuary for preservation and his family in Bihar was informed of the incident. The accused waiter Dayal was apprehended from the banquet hall.

Dayal told the police during interrogation that he had taken the gun from its owner Jitender to play with it. Dayal, Jitender and the victim Kailash were seated at the banquet hall terrace at the time of the incident.
Dayal has claimed that he was playfully pointing the gun towards Kailash and that both were having fun when it suddenly went off.
