A 24-year-old driver was bludgeoned to death with an iron rod in central Delhi’s Jhandewalan on Tuesday.

The driver’s helper has been arrested for the murder. Police said the suspect has confessed to his crime.

The murder was allegedly a result of a drunken argument over money gone wrong. A murder case has been registered with Paharganj police station.

The bloody body was discovered lying by the road near Videocon Tower in Jhandewalan by a passer-by on Wednesday morning.

Soon he called the police control room. Police reached the spot and sent the body for a post-mortem.

Police said the victim had sustained several and severe wounds on the head and face. His face in particular had been brutally targeted.

Investigations led to the victim being recognised as Ramesh Chauhan alias Deepak, a driver of a goods vehicle.

He worked for a transport company and at nights, slept in his vehicle itself.
Further investigations revealed that Chauhan was last seen with his helper Umesh Kumar Patel who was found absconding since the incident.

A manhunt was launched for Patel who was arrested in Paharganj later in the day.
He confessed to the crime and a bloodstained iron rod allegedly used in the murder was recovered.

Police said Patel was involved in some monetary dispute with the victim for few days. They had argued several times over this issue.

They were sharing drinks on Tuesday night when their discussion veered towards the monetary dispute. The argument soon turned into a scuffle.

As soon as Patel managed to get out of Chauhan’s grip, he reached out for an iron rod lying in their vehicle parked nearby.

He then allegedly smashed Chauhan’s head and face repeatedly till he died. Patel then fled from the spot, said police.
