The Kalya-namantapa, an ornate hall inside the Amba Vilas Palace, built in accordance with royalty, on Thursday, set the podium for the ceremony, a third such in the history of the Wadiyars of Mysore.

Previously, Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar and his father, the last ruler of Mysuru, Jayachamaraja Wadiyar were anointed in the same Palace. Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar joined the list of his ancestors, by ascending the throne here.

Though the 24th and celebrated ruler Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar stayed in the same Palace, he was born in the old wooden palace that existed in the same place till its destruction in a fire mishap on February 28, 1897. The fire mishap occurred during the wedding of then princes Jayalakshmammanni (sister of Nalwadi) with sardar M Kantharaje Urs. So the foundation was laid to the new Palace in the year 1897. The construction of Palace was completed in 1912.

Prior to the fire mishap, Nalwadi, aged 10, was anointed as the successor to his father Chamaraja Wadiyar Ten at the old wooden palace. As Nalwadi was a minor, the queen mother Kempanajammanni — popular as ‘Vani Vilasa Sannidhana’ — was appointed as regent. It was only after Nalwadi attained 18 years, he took over the reign.
