The State BJP on Thursday condemned the hike in fees for undergraduate engineering courses for government quota students stating that the State government has succumbed to the pressure of private managements.

The Higher Education department on Wednesday had signed a consensual agreement with the managements of private engineering colleges on seat sharing and fee structure. Government quota students would have to pay 20 to 24 per cent more fee when compared to last year.

BJP leader and former higher education minister C T Ravi, in a statement said, Comed-K was already collecting hefty fees from its quota of students (30 per cent) and NRI quota students. The hike in fees for government quota students was unjustified and unreasonable and should be withdrawn with immediate effect, Ravi said.

“The government seems to be more concerned about protecting the interests of private managements rather than students,” Ravi said and added that the government should make public the report submitted by the fee fixation committee.
