4 killed, 35 injured as bus topples

Four passengers were killed and 35 injured when a private bus they we travelling by toppled on the National Highway-13 near Marulasiddeshwar Complex in Channagiri town on Friday.

According to the police, the deceased are Praveen, 24, a resident of Geddalahatti of the taluk; Umapathy of Gullehalli; Murthy, 33, of Melanayakanakatte of Channagiri taluk and Mudasir alias Aijaz, 31, from Veerapur in Bhadravathi.

Six of the injured are said to be critical. They are Siddaramanna of Agarabannihatti, Rafiq Khan and  Madhukumar of Santhebennur, Beeralingappa of Channapur village, Kalleshappa of Kondadahalli village and Shankarappa of Benkikere, said the police. The injured were rushed to hospitals in Davangere and Shivamogga.

About 70 passengers were in the Geethanjaneya private bus which was bound towards Davanagere from Channagiri through the Devarahalli-Santhebennur route. The driver lost control of the wheels and toppled as the highway was sloping in that spot, said the police.

The bus driver, conductor and cleaner emerged unhurt from the accident and are absconding, said the police. A crane lifted the bus off the road and traffic resumed on the highway. The Channagiri police registered a case.
