Pharmacist among five arrested with drugs worth Rs 12 cr

Over 20 kilo contraband seized in two raids by cops

Narcotics worth Rs 12 crore in the international market have been seized and five persons arrested in two different raids in the city.

The arrested men include a pharmacist who was allegedly supplying banned drug ephedrine in the guise of medicines.

The first raid was conducted in Bhagirath Place Market in north-west Delhi when the Crime Branch learnt that the pharmacist would arrive at his shop with a huge consignment of ephedrine.

Sunil Sharma, 50, was nabbed while he was entering his medicine shop with a heavy polythene bag in his hand, said police.

A search of the packet led to the recovery of 10.2 kilo narcotics substance.

A further search in his store led to the recovery of another 10 kilos of the same drug. The total value of the seized drugs is Rs 2 crore, said police.

Police said Sharma, a Commerce graduate from Delhi University, took to selling ephedrine as his normal pharmacy business was not doing well.

He would allegedly procure the drugs from a chemical company in Ahmedabad and sell them to customers in the city.

Ephedrine is mostly used as a chemical precursor in the illegal manufacturing of psychotropic substances such as methamphetamine, amphetamine and methcathinone.
Addicts either use it directly or in a combination with caffeine and alcohol.

Police said the seizure was made by a Crime Branch team specially formed to curtail the chain of wholesome supplies of ephedrine.

In the other case, a Special Cell team has arrested four alleged drug suppliers over a period of few days and seized one kilo heroin and five kilos of opium from them.

The worth of the drugs seized in this case is pegged at Rs 10 crore in the international market.

Police said they were keeping surveillance on one suspect Rampal for the last six months. He was finally nabbed on Loni flyover on May 24.

One kilo heroin was seized from him.

His interrogation led police to his three accomplices who were arrested separately in different places over the next five days.

The last arrest led to police recovering five kilos opium.
