'Popular' Viru sticks to '20-wicket' comment

Last Updated 21 January 2010, 18:20 IST

“You are quite popular here, aren’t you?” Shastri asked, but Sehwag replied with a smile lingering on his face, “Yes, Indian cricketers are very popular in Bangladesh.”

The expectations of a bit more diplomacy from Sehwag after all the heated reactions for his earlier comments soon evaporated. The stand-in Indian captain, after some initial reticence, asserted that Bangladesh bowlers were not good enough to take 20 Indian wickets.
“No, they can’t (take 20 wickets) in Test cricket. They still have not got 20 wickets,” Sehwag said. The home side had managed to take 18 Indian wickets in the first Test that the visitors won by 113 runs.

Prior to the first Test, the Delhi Dasher had stated that Bangladesh were an ‘ordinary’ side because of their incapability to dismiss India twice in a Test match.

Sehwag declared when India reached 413 for eight in their second innings and when a local scribe raised the point, he replied, “I declared because I wanted to win this game.”

The Bangladeshi journalists then tried to provoke Sehwag, pointing out to him missing a big innings in the first Test. The Delhiite swatted away those googlies easily, “I am happy with my batting.” Simple but efficient, that’s Sehwag for you.
