A 45-year-old jobless man, who used to steal valuables and cash from his female relatives and friends by sedating them, has been arrested, the Yeshwantpur police said.

Gnanaprakash alias Prakash, a resident of Kothanur, would visit his women relatives and friends on one pretext or the other and offer them ice cream or cakes laced with sedatives. Once the women fell asleep after eating them, Gnanaprakash would make off with their valuables and cash. According to police, the suspect would mix Larpose 2 mg tablets into the cakes.

On May 5, 2015, he visited a woman friend in Mathikere and offered her a cake mixed with the sedative. He told her he was distributing sweets as he had got a job promotion recently. The woman readily ate the cake and fell unconscious soon after. When she woke up after a couple of hours, she realised the gold ornaments she was wearing were missing and the cash in the cupboard was stolen too.

She then approached the police and made a complaint. A police officer said Gnanaprakash had stolen valuables from at least seven women in a similar fashion. Three of them have made police complaints. Police are investigating if the suspect molested any of his victims. So far, none of them have spoken about that, the officer added.

According to police, they recovered 100 grams of gold valuables, Rs 7,500 in cash and four mobile phones from Gnanaprakash. The total worth of the valuables is Rs four lakh.
