On World Environment Day, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu unveiled plans to reduce the national transporter’s carbon footprint.

In a programme organised by the ministry on Friday, he revealed his roadmap for introducing bio-diesel and windmills in its energy basket and adopting energy efficient technologies for running trains.

Addressing the day long event on environment, Prabhu said that climate change is affecting rainfall and other cycles, and that it is high time to respond to the challenges posed by such changes, both individually and collectively.

He said the railways is one of the major consumers of energy and steps taken to reduce carbon emissions here will impact overall emissions.

Prabhu said railways will drastically reduce consumption of traditional energy in non-locomotive usage. The use of LED bulbs, solar energy and wind energy in offices, stations, factories and other establishments will drastically reduce consumption in these sections.
