Aditi triumphs at St Andrews

Talented teenager Aditi Ashok added a major crown to her kitty, romping home to a superb victory in the St Rule Trophy at the St Andrews Links in UK.

The 17-year-old Bengalurean, the current leader in the IGU Ladies Order of Merit, sealed a brilliant wire-to-wire victory at the home of golf. In the process she also became one of the youngest winners of the prestigious 54-hole tournament.

Determined to make a name for herself, Aditi opened her campaign with a stunning eight-under 67 at the par-75 New Course to equal the women’s amateur course record. She then returned in the afternoon to card another brilliant four-under 71 to stay three shots ahead of the chasing pack. She settled for a final round two-over 78 at the Old Course to total 10-under and wrap up a five-shot win over Bethan Popel.

Aditi, who is coached by Steven Guliano from Malaysia, said his influence has played a major role in her development. “I have played in England quite a few times and also once at Gullane so I knew the weather could be bad even at the end of May. There were a few short par-5’s on the New Course and I capitalised on that as I birdied all of them. I putted really well and missed only one putt within 10 feet. Another challenging aspect was the size of greens as some of them were 100 yards long at Old Course.

“Winning any title is always special but winning at St Andrews is something else. It is by far the most special feeling,” said Aditi, the three-time National Junior Champion.
Aditi, the only Indian golfer to have played the Asian Youth Games, Youth Olympics and Asian Games, also said: “There was a certain amount of pressure to perform but I didn’t feel it because playing at Old Course had always been a dream of mine. I just enjoyed the feeling of playing there and hitting shots in that wind.”
