Lakebed layout: Upalokayukta to wait for House panel report

The suspense over the fate of lakebed layouts in the City will continue till the House Committee on Lake encroachments led by Ranebennur MLA K B Koliwad submits its final report.

As the Committee is set to table its report in a week’s time, Upalokayukta Justice Subhash Adi, who has been hearing the matters pertaining to the residential layouts formed by the BDA and other civic agencies on the water bodies, has said that the government should take a decision on the matter in the best interests of the people.
While hearing the matter of lakebed layouts by the BDA, following a complaint filed by J Kumaraswamy about a residential layout on Venkatarayanakere in Gubbalala village under Uttarahalli hobli, Justice Adi on Friday observed, “The government while taking a decision in the matter, must see the legal consequences and public interest. I am informed that the sadan samithi constituted by the government for protection and development of lakes is likely to submit a report within a week. In such an event, it is appropriate to wait for the sadan samithi report.”

Justice Adi had sought a detailed report from the State government, which failed to submit its reply on June 5.

The Upalokayukta said that any action of the government on concerning encroachers of lakebed area should be in concurrence with the existing laws and decisions of the Supreme Court and the High Court.

Meanwhile, the government has stated that layouts had been formed on 23 lakes, against the earlier figure of 20.

The BDA had notified 388 acres and 13 guntas in 16 lakes for acquisition and the same was approved by the Urban Development department. In respect of seven other lakes, no acquisition has been made. The deputy commissioner of Bengaluru Urban district should verify whether the remaining 282 acres is encroached upon, Justice Adi said.
