Couple sells newborn for Rs 4,500 in Tripura

A tribal couple in Tripura sold their new born boy for Rs 4500 as they were unable to bear the cost of bringing up the child.

The incident was reported from the remote Munda Basti, a village that falls under the Tripura Tribal Area Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), which is also ruled by the Left front.

“When my wife was three months pregnant, we consulted a doctor and requested for an abortion. We did not want the child because we already had three children and for a hand-to-mouth family, bringing up another child was impossible. But the villagers convinced me not to abort the child and said they will help getting a better life for the baby,” said Ranjit Tanti, father of the child.

After the child was born, one of the villagers played the ‘middleman’ and helped the couple sell the child to a childless couple in Duski village, 35 km from Munda Basti. The couple had asked for more, but finally the deal was settled at Rs 4500, sources added. The newborn was handed over on June 2.
