Companies show interest in hiring pure science students

At a time when the interest of students in taking up pure science at the under graduate level and university level is dwindling primarily over the question of its job prospects, here is some heartening news.

Over the past one year, the central placement cell at Bangalore University has been getting a number of queries from companies keen on hiring the postgraduate science students.

A representative of the placement cell at BU said, “We have seen that most of the companies ask for the students from the department of Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics, English, Foreign Language and MBA.”

According to information provided by the placement cell, as many as 30 companies have evinced interest in recruiting postgraduate students. Of these, ten companies have already recruited the students. Out of which, five companies have recruited PG students from the science department. The companies like Pearson Learning Center, Edutel Technologies Pvt Ltd, Wipro, Aakash Institute and Narayana Group of Institutions are education services companies. The roles for which they are hired range from teaching, content development and business marketing.

The recruitment have taken place over around 18 months with around 1,200 students participating in the recruitment drive. Of this  as many as 100 students have already got offer letters. More than 60 per cent of the 100 students belong to the science department said the representative.

Arun Gowda T, a final year postgraduate student of Biological Sciences in BU who recently landed a job with the Aakash Institute, says, “I have been hired as an assistant professor in one of the centers of the institute and the salary that they had offered was also quite good. I have been teaching for a while now and this was a good offer that I could not refuse. In future, I want to crack NET and GATE exams to further my career in academics. I will be heading to New Delhi for a period of three months for training and will be posted to one of the centers in the country,” he said.

“Most of the jobs offered were related to academics and education services. We still do not have companies who hire graduates and PG holders in research and development sector. However, the interest evinced by a number of companies shows what a coordinated and systematic effort can do.We are considering a more integrated plan for placements in the coming days,” said M K Sridhar, head of central placement cell at BU.
