8 robbers make away with 22 lakh

A group of eight robbers robbed a bag holding Rs 22 lakh from the employees of a spices and herbs dealer in north Delhi’s Keshavpuram on Saturday night.

The robbers also shot a motorcycle rider in his leg to rob his two-wheeler after their own vehicle developed mechanical faults while fleeing, police said. The injured victim is receiving treatment and he is said to be out of danger.

Police said they were clueless about the identity of the suspects till Sunday evening. A case of robbery, attempt to murder and arms act has been registered at Subhash Place police station even as police are questioning several persons, including the trader’s employees.

This is the second armed robbery reported from north-west police district between Friday and Saturday. Motorcycle-borne men had robebd a businessman of gold ornaments at gunpoint near their office in Ashok Vihar on Friday. The victim’s brother had chased the robbers in his car, resulting in the death of one suspect and injuries to his accomplice.

In the latest incident reported on Saturday night, the eight robbers had arrived by Maruti Swift car and a motorcycle. They intercepted two men Satish and Sanjay near Wzirpur Flyover while they were travelling in a Maruti Ritz car.

The two men work for Saket Agarwal, a businessman who trades in spices and herbs at the Khari Baoli market near Chandni Chowk. They had shut shop at around 8.30 pm and left with the day’s collection to hand it over to Agarwal. They had kept the money in the car’s diggy.

Upon intercepting the car, one of the robbers shot at the Ritz car’s windshield, causing it to shatter. The two occupants were forced to bring the car to a halt. They claimed they tried to put up a fight, but had to step back after the robbers broke a side windowpane of the car. The robbers then took out the cash-laden bag from the car.

But as they were trying to flee, their motorcycle developed a technical fault, forcing them to abandon the vehicle there. But they suddenly spotted a motorcycle passing by upon which they fired a shot at him.

Two of the robbers rode away on his motorcycle while the others fled by car. The motorcycle owner Amrit Ranjan sustained a bullet injury to his leg and was rushed to a hospital. Police have seized the abandoned motorcycle and are probing the case.
