Wedding party arrives on tractor, bride refuses to marry

A bride allegedly walked out of her marriage in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur-Kheri district, about 150 kilometres from here, because the wedding party had arrived at the venue on a tractor-trolley.

The bride felt that travelling to the wedding venue on a tractor was a “humiliation” to her. The incident occurred on Wednesday night at Naraina village.

According to reports, the marriage of Saroj had been fixed with Ramesh Kumar (both names changed), a resident of the same district. The wedding party arrived at the venue late on Wednesday evening for the ceremony.

The moment the bride came to know that the wedding party had arrived on a tractor-trolley and not by car or bus, she refused to marry. “It is a humiliation to me,” Saroj reportedly told her parents and asked them to convey her decision to the groom’s father.

The groom’s father said he had to bring the wedding party on a tractor-trolley as travel agents couldn’t provide a car or a bus, owing to the ongoing wedding season.

His justification however had no effect on the bride and she remained firm on her decision.
A panchayat was also held to resolve the matter but it failed to convince the bride, and ultimately the wedding party had to return empty-handed.

Wedding parties often travel on tractor-trolleys in rural areas as they come cheap and are easily available. It is however illegal to employ tractors for any work other than agriculture.
