PIL on trash: HC slams Palike chief's absence

A special bench of High Court of Karnataka comprising Justice N Kumar and Justice B V Nagarathna, which is hearing the matter pertaining to garbage menace in the City, on Friday refused to hear the matter after it found that the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Administrator T M Vijay Bhaskar was not present before the court.

During the hearing of a PIL petition by Kavitha Shankar and others, the bench, when it found that the BBMP administrator was not present in the court for hearing, lashed out at the Palike and said, “Where is the administrator? During the previous hearing, we gave you sufficient time since the administrator had assumed the office recently and required time to study the matter and our earlier orders. You were supposed to make a submission today regarding the plans to manage the waste, but the administrator is not present for the hearing. How can he do so?”

The garbage problem has assumed serious proportion but  you (Palike) have not taken the matter seriously. The administrator thinks that this is not an important matter “If you honour the court, the court will honour you,” the bench observed.

When the BBMP submitted that the administrator was unable to come to the court and mentioned that the BBMP commissioner and the special officer are before the court, the bench refused to buy the submission and adjourned the matter saying that the matter will not be heard until the administrator appears before the court. The bench has given the administrator a ‘last chance’ to appear before the court by next week.
