Lighter school bags for Maharashtra kids soon

In what comes as a good news for kids and parents, Maharashtra government has launched an initiative to reduce the weight of school bags – and if possible, it would be implemented from the next academic year.

The campaign to reduce the weight of school bags was launched by Vinod Tawde, the minister for higher and technical education and medical education– who himself, earlier this year went to various schools of Mumbai and weighed bags on a measuring scale. “Pleased to assure that the weight of school bags will be lightened by June16 using input report of parents and officials,” Tawde tweeted on Saturday evening.

“When the minister went to various schools…he found that the weights of bags vary from schools to schools, classes to classes….on an average, it was somewhere over four to five kgs, at some places it was more than six kgs…We want it to be of the order of 2.5 kgs or a little more ,” a close aide of Tawde, told the Deccan Herald on Saturday.  “There are various factors…how many periods in a day, workbooks, exercise books and notebooks and so on. Besides, one also has to consider the weight of tiffin boxes and water bottles, which can be said as a part of school bag as it is carried with it,” he said.

Tawde and his team of school education department are also looking at what other states are doing. Besides, the government is also looking at guidelines of courts in this regard. According to him, the final report of the committee appointed to suggest changes – will  be submitted later this month after which suggestions and objections.
