Woman, son fall into well, die

 A woman and her son died when they fell into an open well, following heavy rains in Vailawada village in the district on Sunday.

The deceased are Kusuma Ramakantha Bandekar (39) and her nine-year-old son Aryan. Kusuma’s other son, who was also with them, escaped. Her husband is a daily-wage labourer in the Kaiga Nuclear Power Plant.

Heavy rains lashed the coast of Uttara Kannada district on Saturday night. Because of the rains, their cattle had not returned home. On Sunday morning, Kusuma set out looking for the cows along with her sons.

Kusuma and Aryan wer caught in a water current and were pulled into the open well. Her 15-year-old son escaped the current and swam to the banks.

Heavy rainfall

The coastal taluks of Uttara Kannada district received heavy rainfall on Saturday. Ankola recorded 111.04 mm rainfall, followed by Kumata at 102.4 mm, Bhatkal- 84 mm, Honnavar- 67.05 mm, Karwar- 68.8 mm, Yellapur- 46.4 mm, Kadra- 83 mm, Ambikanagar- 45.8 mm, Ganeshagudi- 18 mm, Sirsi- 22.5 mm, Siddapur- 9.2 mm, Joida- 45 mm, Haliyal- 12.30 mm, Mundagod- 1.4 mm and Dandeli- 4 mm.

Karwar received continuous rainfall from 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday.
