Teachers cheated by denying salary: Rao

The resolution moved by the Zilla Panchayat general meet held on Monday to extend the service of contract teachers in Morarji Desai Residential School, Ashrama Schools and Backward and Minorities Residential Schools has no legal validity, said Zilla Panchayat in-charge president S N Raja Rao.

Speaking to media persons after assuming the charge of Zilla Panchayat in-charge president, Raja Rao said that the teachers who were serving on contract basis were not paid for the past five months. “Teachers were being cheated by denying their salary. Hence, it is not right to extend the contract to the same organisation which is not paying salary to teachers properly,” he urged. He said that the teachers who teach in Ashrama Schools were paid only Rs 2,250 as salary. They should be paid at least Rs 4,000 per month, he emphasised.

Teachers should not be cheated by awarding contract to organisations which quote less amount, he said adding that a decision should be taken after holding discussion with the MLA. He pointed out that though the government sanctions Rs 400 as dress allowance, students were provided with poor quality dress materials worth around Rs 250-300 in residential schools. Similarly, food to children at residential schools should not be supplied under contract system. School wardens should be made responsible if any complaints arise in the supply of food, he added.  ZP member from BJP Manu Muthappa said that the Zilla Panchayat president had no power to convene a meeting on Monday and the meeting was unlawful. Hence, memorandum will be submitted to the government for the cancellation of all resolutions taken at the meeting, he added.

Priority on development

“Development of Kodagu district is my priority. All members will be taken into confidence while continuing in power,” Raja Rao said.

He assured that he would strive for the implementation of Rajiv Gandhi Electricity Scheme and other development programmes including betterment of hospitals in the district.
