A healthy indulgence

I developed a passion for cooking only after marriage. Though I can’t clearly remember the dish that I had first made, I can vaguely recall that it was some potato gravy with rice. Hailing from Punjab, I enjoy cooking anything that is authentically Punjabi.

For many, cooking is a stressbuster and the same holds true for me too. When you are cooking, your entire focus is on making that particular dish as tasty as possible and giving it your best shot, even if you are just making a simple dal or sabzi.

As you get engrossed in the process, you tend to forget everything else and I find this
process relaxing.

Nowadays, a number of cookery shows have come up on television and they really help one learn. I particularly like watching Sanjeev Kapoor’s Khana Khazana as it has helped me learn more dishes.  I also enjoy watching shows like MasterChef and feel that they give a platform to those who are passionate about cooking.

I like to experiment as much as possible with my cooking and come up with different variations of the same recipe. My family and friends relish the rajma chawal and chhole that I make.

Of late, I have developed a love for baking. Though it started slowly, it soon turned into something that I loved spending all my free time on. Now, it has become a passion and I can’t get enough of it. It has been a year-and-a- half since I started baking and I want to learn as many techniques of baking and various types of cakes. I would love to
open a store of my own in future someday.

At times when I am stressed out, baking a simple cake or a few cookies helps me relax. I just love the entire process — from making the batter to seeing the cake rise and giving the finishing touches.

As someone who believes that healthy eating is the key to a healthy life, I am into healthy baking. The main ingredients that I use for the cakes are ‘ragi’ and whole wheat flour.

The recipe that I am sharing is that of whole wheat chocolate cake, which is healthy and not very sweet. A cake like this can even be consumed by a diabetic as the sugar content is minimal and the wheat provides a lot  of fibre.
