NHRC notice to TN govt over toilet cleaning by school girls

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has recommended the Tamil Nadu Government to take legal action against the headmistress who had allegedly forced two girl students to clean toilets in Tirunelveli.

The Commission has also issued a show-cause notice to the Tamil Nadu government asking why Rs 25,000 should not be paid as relief to the two girl students of Panchayat Union Middle School.

"Justice D Murugesan, Member of the Commission has also recommended that the state government initiate legal action against the Head Mistress of the school for her misconduct," an NHRC statement said.

During the course of inquiry, the Commission found that the two girls were the daughters of a sweeper who on that particular day had not turned up for the job and thus the headmistress asked her daughters to clean the toilet.

"Also, Rs 20 per week being paid to the sweeper for cleaning the toilet cannot be justified as a reasonable wage under any standard," observed the Commission which accordingly has asked the Secretary, Department of Social Justice, Government of Tamil Nadu to take action and submit the report along with response to the show cause notice within six weeks.
