Need for workforce to achieve sustainable development stressed

Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) chairman A S Kiran Kumar said on Thursday that there was a need to provide inputs to the decision-makers of the country based on scientific analysis to tackle the issues people are facing.

Delivering the convocation address during Kuvempu University’s 25th annual convocation, he said each citizen of the country has a role to play in this regard. 

“We need to improve our skills and ability to address the issues objectively through a rigorous scientific approach wherein all the implications of tackling the problems we are facing are analysed,” he said.

Kumar said the industry in the country and worldover employ emerging technologies and are constantly striving to modernise production techniques through innovative methods.

But the availability of skilled people is less. So, the country needs new generation of skilled people who can comprehend the changing scenario, address issues of sustainable development and thus bring about solutions to the current problems without causing any adverse impact on climate and habitability of earth.

 As many as 200 PhD degrees were conferred on the occasion. Governor Vajubhai Vala presided over the event. Kuvempu University vice-chancellor Jogan Shankar, Registrar S Mallika Ghanti, Finance Officer Keshavaiah, Registrar (Evaluation) H S Bhojya Naik and others were present on the occasion. 

Though the programme was slated to begin at 11 am, the Governor arrived at the convocation hall at 11.20 am. He presented degree certificates to only a few select students and left the venue even before the completion of the ceremony.
