Byelections to five Assembly seats in the State may still be far away. But senior leader V Somanna, who crossed over from the Congress to the BJP after resigning from his Govindrajnagar Assembly seat, has already started the ground work.

On Wednesday, he hosted a mega lunch at Gayatri Vihar in Palace grounds, which more than 25,000 guests, including prominent BJP leaders and hundreds of his supporters from Govindrajnagar constituency, partook.

A huge pandal accommodated the invitees, who were treated to both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Prominent leaders who attended the lunch are Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, Ministers Shobha Karandlaje, Katta Subramanya Naidu, R Ashok, BJP leaders Ananth Kumar, P C Mohan and Chandre Gowda.

Somanna is expected to be inducted into Yeddyurappa’s Cabinet in the first week of June. He is inclined to field his son Dr Arun as the BJP candidate from Govindrajnagar, though the BJP top brass is yet to endorse it. As for Somanna, the BJP may either induct him into the Cabinet and nominate him to the Legislative Council or may field him as a candidate in the local body elections either from Mysore or Chamarajanagar. In January next, eight to ten MLC seats will fall  vacant, sources said.

When contacted, Somanna said it was just a lunch for friends and no political meaning should be given to it. “I host a lunch for my friends and supporters every year. The only change this time is the venue - Palace Grounds,” he quipped.
