Police nab man who murdered PU student

Udupi Police team led by Superintendent of Police Annamalai nabbed a person who murdered Akshatha Deavdiga, second PU student, near Henaberu forest area on June 17.

Briefing reporters, IGP (Western Range) Amrith Pal said the case which had left no clues to chase culprits was successfully sorted out by police team within two days.
 The main accused Sunil alias Kappe (19) strangulated Akshatha using her veil and killed her while attempting to sexually assault her. Police have also taken Akshay (19) to custody for being part of the crime. 

He was taken to custody for trying to mislead and destroying evidences. He had supported the accused in the aftermath of the crime by misleading the police, he added. 

He had told the police that the accused was with him in Kundapur as part of admission to ITI college till evening. However, the accused had returned around 12.30 pm. 

The victim, who was on her way back home, was teased by the culprit, and began sprinting once the accused began following her. 

The victim covered nearly 1.7 km of forest area before falling prey. The incident took place between 4.30 to 4.50 pm. The body was recovered at 6.05 pm.

The IGP said the accused is from Yojana Nagar in Byndoor, who has done his PUC in Byndoor and enrolled into ITI course in Kundapur. 

School beat

The IGP said police will start school beats in the area, as students should travel five km to reach schools and colleges. 

Highly placed sources said police questioned nearly 250 persons to nab the culprit. It is said the accused was in the hunt of victim’s friend who later changed her college. 

The accused who strangulated the victim, washed his hands and legs in the nearby water body. 

Later, he had a haircut and tried to hide the crime. The sniffer dog was unable to proceed beyond water body owing to destruction of crime scene, as nearly 2,000 people had  gathered at the spot on the day.
