Top scientists to attend physics conference today

Last Updated 21 June 2015, 19:31 IST

Some of the world's top physicists will brainstorm and exchange ideas at the Strings-2015 conference at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in the City between June 22 and 27.

Leading researchers in physics will present the latest developments in the field. In 2001, the prestigious conference was organised in India at the TIFR campus in Mumbai.

Celebrated physicist and best-selling author Stephen Hawking travelled to India in 2001 to attend the conference, during which he gave public lectures in Mumbai and Delhi. Other stalwarts such as David Gross (Nobel laureate) and Ed Witten too attended the event.

While Hawking will not attend the event in the City, both Gross and Witten are scheduled to speak at the conference. India's very own Ashoke Sen, one of the world's best known string theorists, is expected to attend.

On June 26, there will be special session on ‘100 years of General Relativity covering various areas of physics, astronomy and cosmology impacted by Einstein’s theory and beyond. The next day, there is a full day public event including an interactive session with students and three public lectures. Over 300 physicists and students are expected to attend the meeting.

Strings-2015 is jointly organised with the Indian Institute of Science-Bengaluru, International Centre for Theoretical Physics-Italy, Infosys Science Foundation- Bengaluru and the Simons Foundation, USA. The Public event is also partnered with the Christ University, Bengaluru.
