BJP nominates M J Akbar for by-election

The BJP has nominated its national spokesperson M J Akbar as the party’s candidate for by-election to the Rajya Sabha seat from Jharkhand.

“BJP president Amit Shah has announced the name of national spokesperson M J Akbar as the party’s candidate for the Jharkhand Rajya Sabha by-polls,” the party said in a statement on Sunday.

Akbar, an eminent editor and author of many books, joined the BJP in March 2014, ahead of sixteenth Lok Sabha polls. Earlier, he was a Congress MP from Kishanganj in Bihar between 1989 and 1991.

The bypoll is due to be held for one seat which fell vacant after resignation of TMC MP Kanwar Deep Singh, owner of the Alchemist Group of Companies, on February 19 last year even. His term was due to expire on July 7, 2016. Jharkhand has six Rajya Sabha seats.

According to the EC, the bypoll will be held on July 2 and the result will be announced same day. The last date of filing of nominations is June 22 while the last date for withdrawal of nomination is June 25.
