'Action against factories not good for farmers'

Last Updated 22 June 2015, 20:00 IST

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that stringent action against sugar factories for recovery of dues does not augur well for the future of sugar factories and farmers as well.

“At first, we have to understand the nature of the problem being faced by sugar cane growers and the factories. The problem is complex and not restricted to this year alone. Initiating strict action against sugar factories is not the only solution to address farmers’ woes,” the chief minister said on Monday. He was speaking to reporters at Almatti in Bagalkot taluk.

He said that the price of sugar had come down due to a glut in the market and in this backdrop the factories are refusing to pay the fair and remunerative price.

The Union government, which has fixed the remunerative price, should find a way out, he said.
