Farmers protest release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu

Last Updated 24 June 2015, 19:48 IST

Farmers’ organisations and pro-Kannada bodies on Wednesday blocked the Bengaluru-Mysuru Road in Mandya and Srirangapatna, condemning the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu even before the KRS touched its full reservoir level.

Traffic on the busy road in both the cities was disrupted for a while. The agitating members raised slogans against the chief minister and the State government.

Sugar cane crop in the district is drying for want of water. The government is not ready to safeguard the interests of local farmers. It should stop releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. If it fails to do so, protests would be launched across the state, the agitating members warned.

Meanwhile, the KRS reservoir received an inflow of 29,363 cusecs.
The water level in the reservoir has increased by 10 feet in the past three days. The water level recorded on Wednesday was 89 feet against the full reservoir level of 142.8 feet. On Wednesday, 9,494 cusecs of water was discharged from the KRS.
