A 25-year-old youth was stabbed on a bus after he allegedly caught a thief stealing his mobile phone from his pocket.

The assailant and his two accomplices escaped by jumping off the running bus immediately after the assault.

The victim suffered a stab wound in the stomach and was admitted to the AIIMS trauma centre where his condition is said to be stable.

Police said they have registered a case of attempt to murder and are on the lookout for the suspects.

The victim has been identified as Bihar native Jitendra Kumar who lives with his friends in Maidangarhi and does odd jobs.

He and his three friends were returning from work in Devli village when the incident took place.

As the bus passed through Ambedkar Nagar, Jitendra suddenly felt some movement in his pocket.

He checked to find a youth trying to pull his mobile phone out of his pocket.
Jitendra immediately caught him and informed his friends who raised an alarm.

Two other passengers, however, suddenly rushed to the suspect’s rescue and warned Jitendra and his friends of dire consequences if he did not let go off the suspect.
Jitendra held on to the suspect which prompted one of his aides to pull out a knife and attack him and his friends. While his friends escaped the assault, Jitendra suffered a wound to his abdomen.

The victim loosened the grip on the suspect and collapsed, giving the thief and his accomplices enough time to jump off the running bus.

The bus was halted upon spotting a PCR van parked by the road. The victim was then rushed to the AIIMS trauma centre in the police vehicle.

The victim, in his statement to police, said he and his friends had asked the thief about his name and address upon which he had identified himself as Rakesh, a resident of south Delhi’s Tigri. Police are using this information to hunt the suspects.
