KSOU to comply with UGC norms, seeks recognition

Last Updated 25 June 2015, 19:36 IST

The derecognition of Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) has forced the varsity authorities to comply with University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines. A decision to this effect was taken at the Academic Council meeting on Thursday.

The varsity authorities have earlier been steadfast against complying with UGC guidelines, especially the ones related to territorial jurisdiction, with KSOU Vice-chancellor M G Krishnan opposing the same.

Now, the varsity has decided to write to UGC, urging it to withdraw its recent public notice against Karnataka State Open University and grant recognition to the varsity. Krishnan said that the issue regarding derecognition was discussed extensively at the meeting.

“We will assure UGC that KSOU will comply with all its regulations and request them to renew our recognition, considering the interests of students who have enrolled for various UG and PG courses in the varsity,” he said.

The University Grants Commission, it can be recalled, had on June 16, 2015, withdrawn recognition from the varsity for ‘blatantly flouting norms’, such as offering medical and technical courses, and operating outside the territorial jurisdiction of the varsity.

Delegation to UGC

While P S Naik, Registrar of the varsity, was earlier scheduled to travel to Delhi to urge UGC to withdraw their order, the plans were delayed due to various factors, Krishnan said.

However, a delegation from varsity will travel to Delhi for the purpose by Monday. While Naik is expected to lead the delegation, Krishnan said that there were chances that he might also travel to Delhi.

BoM meeting

The Board of Management (BoM) meeting of the varsity is scheduled to be held on Friday. BoM member and MLC Go Madhusudan had recently alleged that varsity had violated orders and norms and had sanctioned Rs 30 crore excess payment for works at the varsity, despite a Governor’s order against the same.
