Indian restaurant in UK declared healthiest by BBC

"Indali Lounge, London, is the healthiest curry house in the UK. They don't use butter, cream or ghee and the naans are made with flour, oats and barley to maximise fibre and minimise starch. Meals are slow-cooked to retain nutrients," the BBC said.

The upmarket cocktail bar atmosphere, with lilac flourishes and slick surfaces adds a contemporary touch to this evolved British Indian cooking," it added.

Bordeaux Quay, Bristol, has been judged as No 2 followed by Saf in London, Heart Buchanan (Glasgow), Pearl Liang (London), New Samsi (Manchester), The Harwood Arms (London), Restaurant Sat Bains (Nottingham), Comptoir Libanais (London) and Terre A Terre in Brighton.

The restaurant is frequented by many celebrities like India's batting genius Sachin Tendulkar, veteran Hindi actor-director Dev Anand and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his wife Cherie Blair.

Indali Lounge was set up some years back by Dr Kartar Lalvani, founder-chairman of Vitabiotics, Britain's largest selling vitamin supplements that received a Queen's Award for Enterprise in 2003 and 2008.

"I am happy that my efforts to promote healthy Indian food have been recognised," he said.

Lalvani who has been in the UK for 53 years said he always found it frustrating to frequently hear people saying how tasty Indian food is, yet how they feel bloated and heavy after eating and how unhealthy it is.

"I have created some extraordinary Indian dishes completely free from butter, ghee and cream and reduce the traditional high levels of spices and yet create dishes which are as tasty, if not more."

Some of the well known dishes served at the restaurant are "butter chicken without butter, daal-makhani without makhan and many more."

Lalvani said he has also applied for patent for his products. He said at Indali, the Chefs use organic produce, probiotic yoghurs and spices with medicinal qualities to create delicious dishes that won't compromise on one's waistline.
