IISc is good, but should be outstanding, says C N R Rao

IISc is good, but it’s not enough to be just that, Bharat Ratna C N R Rao told an august academic gathering at the IISc Alumni Global Conference on Friday.

He addressed the gathering after he was felicitated by the IISc Alumni, faculty and students.

“IISc should not only be good, but it should be outstanding, the best and the greatest. If we have to be in the league of universities like MIT, Harvard, Stanford and Berkeley, it should happen fast. If this can’t happen in the next 10 years, I don’t see how it can later. If China,  South Korea can be in the top 100, I don’t see why IISc should not be in that league,” he said.

“Nearly 56 years ago, the great C V Raman took two or three of us around the labs. Those days there was nothing. We ourselves had to fabricate facilities, equipment and instruments. I took great inspiration from Raman. J R D Tata, too, was a good friend,” said Rao.
