State moves SC, seeks more time for BBMP polls

After agreeing to hold BBMP polls within three months, the Karnataka government on Monday approached the Supreme Court seeking more time to hold elections to the civic body.

The State government in the fresh application before the court, has sought more time to complete the de-limitation of wards and reservation of seats as per the 2011 census figures.

This comes in the wake of the Karnataka High Court’s recent rejection of a similar plea for more time. The HC had asked the state election commission to conduct polls on the basis of the existing wards and updated electoral rolls.

On May 5, the apex court had recorded a statement from the State government’s counsel to hold election in three months. The fresh plea before the apex court came in the backdrop of the July 28 poll schedule announced by the poll panel last week.
