With improved defence, Delhi hope to raise the game

With Season 2 of the Pro-Kabaddi League all set to roll out, Dabang Delhi insist they have worked on their last year’s frailties and will put up a better show this time around.

In the inaugural season in 2015, Delhi finished sixth in the eight-team competition. Their defence had proved to be the weak link, undoing the good work by its raiders, Surjeet Narwal and Kashiling Adake, in particular.

"We have assessed our faults from the last season. We used to take the lead before half-time but in the second half, we used to let it go. So the defence was the biggest weak point in the team," Narwal told Deccan Herald.

Adake, who had ably supported Narwal during the raids, stressed the importance of time management.

"Narwal is a senior player, he tells us that we don't need a point during every raid. He wants us to assess the game situation and accordingly play with one eye on the clock," said Adake.

The team management has roped in experienced coach Honappa Gowda this year while to manage the fitness and conditioning of the players, they have got Dr Sandeep Kumar on board.

"With coach Gowda's arrival, I believe we become a better team than before. Also, Dr Sandip takes care of our diet, mental aspect, concentration and fitness. So we expect to put up a better performance this year," said Adake.

Assistant coach Arjun Singh, who was with the team in the first season, said the players have improved fitness from last year and the bench strength, too, has been beefed up ahead of the second edition.

Honappa has worked hard on the team’s defence and was confident of the team’s chances.

"Defence was frail last time around, concentration for the entire game was also not maintained. We have put in an extra effort on these aspects and with quality raiders in the squad, I think we can turn the corner," said former India captain and Arjuna awardee.
