SEC dancing to govt's tunes, says Gowda

JD (S) leader H D Deve Gowda said the ruling Congress was making concerted efforts to get the elections to the BBMP postponed and even the State Election Commission (SEC) was dancing to tune of the government.

Addressing the media in Bengaluru on Friday, Gowda said it was shameful to see the government trying to wriggle out of the polls, despite being pulled up by the courts. How many times will the government move the Supreme Court, he wondered.

Accusing the SEC of being influenced by the government, Gowda said this had dented poll commission’s image and reputation.

The SEC, which is an independent constitutional body, should assess when the elections should be held and once such an assessment is done, the courts cannot interfere, he said.

If the State government fails to co-operate with the conduct of the elections as per the calendar of events fixed by the State Election Commission, then it is punishing the citizens, he added. Also, when the elections are imminent, neither the SEC nor the courts have the power to postpone them. The election process should have started six months before the term of the corporators ended, he said.

He criticised the government for not furnishing the list of delimitation and reservation orders to the election commission, nor responding to the commission’s notices.
