Various organisations celebrated the 96th birth anniversary of erstwhile ruler of Mysuru Jayachamarajendra Wa-diyar in the City on Saturday.

Participating in a programme organised by Karnataka Rajya Arasu Mahasabha and Mysuru Palace Board at Gombe Thotti, on the premises of Amba Vilas Palace, the formerly residence of the Wadiyars, administrative officer of Manteswamy mutt (Arasu mutt) B L Prabhudevaraje Urs urged the State government to celebrate the birth anniversaries of the Wadiyars who have immensely contributed for the development of the province.

Urs said, “When we are celebrating the Jayanti of Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar, who was the 25th and last ruler of the Yadu dynasty, the government should have the courtesy to celebrate the occasion onits own.”

Yadu dynasty’s kings have immensely contributed for the development of the province. So, the statues of past rulers Chamarajendra Wadiyar X and his son Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar adorn the heart of the City. While Chamarajendra Wadiyar’s statue stands at the circle named after him, opposite the North Gate of the Palace, Nalwadi’s statue is at K R Circle, the junction named after him. The statue of Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar is coming up at Hardinge Circle, measures should be taken to install the statue of the late royal scion Srikantadatta Nar-asimharaja Wadiyar at the intersection of D D Urs road and  JLB Road near Maharani’s Women’s College, Urs demanded.

President of Karnataka Rajya Arasu Mahasabha Nandish G Urs regretted that though the government celebrates birth anniversaries of various leaders, the past rulers have been ignored.

Books planned

At the programme organised by Arasu Mandali Sangha at a different venue in the City, the Sangha president H D Naveen Raje Urs disclosed that it has been decided to publish books on the Wadiyars, who were the benevolent rulers of the province.

Naveen said, “The younger generation — irrespective of community — are not aware of the past rulers. Most of the members of the Arasu clan lack adequate information, barring the names of the Maharajas. Taking all these into cognisance, it has been decided to publish books on the maharajas of the princely State of Mysuru.”

Naveen said the Sangha is also ready to reprint the books, having valuable information about the Wadiyars.

“Though Wadiyars laid the foundation for education in modern Mysuru, none of the universities in the State are named after them. The government should think over it,” he added. Artistes and the Sangha members N Rekha Urs, Amba Urs, Tejasri and Sindhusri rendered the musical compositions of Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar on the occasion.
