As many as 18 Koraga families residing in Nadsalu in Padubidri have demanded decent livelihood and habitat and if district administration fails to ensure better facilities, the families would shift their home to DC office.

The 18 families belonging to different areas of Padubidri Gram Panchayat had come down to Nadsalu near Suzlon Company on assurances from the government to offer them houses under housing schemes. They had shifted their occupancy to Nadsalu on  July 7, 2014 expecting better housing facilities. They started off their livelihood with temporary tents.

Srimati, from one of family held the district administration as responsible for the dangerous situations they encounter everyday in the temporary sheds. She said last year during Valmiki Jayanti, the families were given title deeds for land in Suzlon Company's rehabilitation colony. However, the title deeds are only in document and not in action.

Houses a dream

The government officials who assured houses did not turn up. The families have received denotification letter for the land. Though houses have remained a dream. The district administration is least concerned. The residents of rehab colony of Suzlon Company have approached Court against district administration decision to ensure housing facilities to Koraga families.

She said rainwater enters the dwelling and house members are unable to sleep. The misquotes and snakes are found in large number in the area. Every moment is spent with fear and life has become hell. The aged people, pregnant women and children suffer a lot. The road leading to tents is filled with water. It is impossible to walk, especially school going children suffer. There is no toilet facilities and temporary arrangements  are made using cloths as walls. She added that if district administration fails to make alternative arrangement, all 18 families would shift their abode in front of DC Office. The administration should immediately respond.

Udupi Tahsildar Guruprsad  said the issue concerning land wherein Koraga families were assured of houses, is before the court. Once stay order is vacated, the administration would act swiftly. Families would be given land and houses would be built under housing schemes, he added.
