Kadlemakki govt college, a sorry tale of negligence

Last Updated 24 July 2015, 18:24 IST

The overcrowded classrooms, stinking toilets, over 100 students cramped into a single classroom, labs without equipment and impure drinking water. This is the tale of Kadlemakki Government PU College in Balehonnur.

The college which was started in 2011 is devoid of basic facilities, is situated just two-km from the town. Though there are five classrooms, only two are utilised for the purpose. There are over 300 students pursuing their studies in the college.

The Arts stream has 105 students, while Commerce—63 and science—19 students.  A classroom that can accommodate 40 students are used by over 200 students for language classes of Kannada and English.

Owing to lack of furnitures, the students are forced to sit on the floor as well. Heavy rain leave the classrooms wet and soggy. As the window panes have been damaged, the rain water enters the classrooms causing severe inconvenience to the students.

A borewell has been sunk in front of the college to cater to the needs of the college. However, the muddy water from the borewell can not be consumed by the students. The students from science stream are forced to listen to the classroom lecture inside the laboratory.

The college has only one toilet. Without the staff for cleaning, it stinks. The post of regular principal and Kannada lecture is lying vacant. The sanctioned group D and second division clerk was never filled since the beginning of the college. “Owing to lack of classrooms, over 50 students did not get admission during the academic year,” said residents.

Inspite of MLA D N Jeevraj and others in the college development committee, no measures have been taken to provide basic facilities to the college, said a parent.
A student said “the physics lab do not have equipment. We do not have microscope and other required chemicals in the last laboratory. We don’t even get pure drinking water.”

“Having unable to bear the stink emanating from toilet, I have personally visited college and cleaned it several times. Without the bus stand at Kadlemakki, students have wait for the bus in open space,” said a canteen owner John Pais.
