India warns Russian channel for 'vulgarity'

Last Updated 26 July 2015, 19:01 IST

Russia Today channel has faced Government of India’s ire for airing an indecent and vulgar YouTube video of a young woman during prime time in December, 2014.

The Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry recently issued a warning to the channel against airing of such contents in future on the recommendation of an inter-ministerial committee which opined that the channel appeared to be ignorant of cable television network rules. Appearing before the inter-ministerial committee, a representative of the channel expressed regret and admitted that it was a mistake on their part to telecast such programme.

The channel representative, however, said the programme was telecast during late hours under the impression that it would be watched by adult persons only and thus, would not be treated as a violation.

Accepting the apology of the channel, the ministry issued an advisory, seeking the channel to air only those programmes which were suitable for unrestricted public exhibition bearing in mind the impression it could leave on the impressionable minds of the children.
