...Meanwhile, Bihar stares at possible drought

Cyclone Komen may have heaped rain-related miseries in neighbouring states like West Bengal and Jharkhand, but the spectre of drought looms large over Bihar this monsoon.

At least 32 of the 38 districts in the state have recorded deficient rainfall till August 2.

While some districts recorded a rainfall deficit of 46 per cent, others like Patna have a rainfall shortage of over 25 per cent.  India Meteorological Department (IMD) sources said overall rainfall deficit in the state stood at 31 per cent.

“Unlike previous years, the state this time did not witness pre-monsoon showers in June. We got a good amount of rainfall only after the south-west monsoon reached here on June 28. But later, there was deficient rainfall throughout the state due to unfavourable position of the monsoon trough line,” said IMD director in Patna A K Sen.
