'Government's porn ban illegal'

Last Updated 05 August 2015, 15:58 IST

The Government of India’s decision to ban 857 porn websites was illegitimate, says Pranesh Prakash, Policy Director, Centre for Internet and Society.

The list of websites was compiled by Kamlesh Vaswani, a lawyer who has filed a public interest litigation in the Supreme Court, seeking a complete ban on all porn websites.

The list was passed on to the government by Additional Solicitor General Pinky Anand,  which in turn passed it on to ISPs with a direction to block all of them.

The Government not only failed to apply its mind, but also acted in haste. In the last hearing of the PIL, Chief Justice of India HL Dattu had refused to pass any interim order banning porn saying it may curtail individuals personal liberty.

Pranesh, also suggested that there was no correlation between banning pornography websites and violence against women, which is one of the claims made by Vaswani in his PIL.
