
Farmers continue to end their lives in the State with four of them committing suicide on Monday.
A debt-ridden farmer hanged himself from a tree at his farm at Kudlahalli in Hiriyur taluk of Chitradurga district. The deceased has been identified as Prabhu (49). He was growing coconut, onion, arecanut and other crops on his 15-acre plot. He had borrowed loan to the tune of Rs nine lakh from various banks. Upset over crop loss and failure to repay the loan, Prabhu ended his life, police said.
Rudrappa Veerabhadrappa Akkaragal (30) committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree at Gonal village in Badami taluk of Bagalkot district.
Out of his 15-acre land, he had had grown Bt cotton on six acres, which failed. He had taken up sericulture on three acres, but failed in the venture since the silk worms died.
Police said that Akkaragal had no loans in his name. However, he had loan of Rs four lakh in the name of his grandfather and Rs two lakh in the name of his father.
Thirty-one-year-old Anandappa hung himself to death at his house in Chikkavalamadi village of Bangarpet taluk of Kolar district.
He owned two acres of land and had borrowed loans from various banks for growing vegetables.
He was dejected as the borewell on his land dried up about 20 days, according to the complaint lodged by his sister, Sangeetha.
Mahantesha Shankarappa Meti (30) ended his life by consuming poison at his land in Machenahalli village of Shirahatti taluk of Gadag district. He owned 3 acres and 33 guntas of land and had borrowed Rs four lakh to fund the education of his brother.
