 Ten persons were killed, nine of them on the spot and 15 more sustained injuries in a head-on collision between a goods vehicle and KSRTC bus near Gojanur village in Shirahatti taluk of Gadag district on Sunday.

According to police, as many as 13 men of Ranathur village in Shirahatti taluk were travelling by a goods vehicle to Naragund to work under an electrical contractor.

The driver of the speeding goods vehicle, in his attempt to avoid hitting a pedestrian, rammed a KSRTC bus headed to Bengaluru.

The driver of the vehicle and nine others were killed on the spot while one breathed last at the hospital.

The goods vehicle was crushed beneath the bus and an earthmover was used to extricate it. Fifteen passengers in the bus were injured in the accident.

Minister H K Patil, who met the victims’ families said that a compensation of Rs one lakh would be paid to the families of the deceased and the government would bear the medical expenses of the injured.
