The outreach centre of the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), Mysuru, will be launched by Kagodu Thimmappa, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, on August 23 at 9 am, at the Sub-Divisional Hospital, in Sagar of Shivamogga district.

The outreach centre is being launched in association with the department of Prevention of Communication Disorders (POCD). S R Savithri, Director of AIISH, will preside over the function.

The POCD department and AIISH are working towards sensitising and educating the public about factors that aid in prevention of communication disorders. Through their programmes, they carry out early identification and diagnosis of communication disorders so that rehabilitative measures can be initiated at the earliest to prevent secondary and tertiary effects of the disorders.

Since a majority of the population with communication disorders reside in rural and semi-urban regions, rehabilitation measures need to be community-oriented, rather than clinic-centered. To reach out to these communities, the outreach centres of AIISH are being established.

The outreach centre will provide assessment and rehabilitative services for communication disorders, prescription of hearing aids and counselling. As part of primary prevention, awareness programmes such as orientations will be carried out to different target groups such as ASHA workers and anganwadi workers. As part of the programme, several screening and diagnostic evaluations will be carried out to screen and evaluate newborns, schoolchildren, industrial employees and others, to identify communication disorders and rehabilitate them at the earliest.
