
The Special Investigating Team (SIT), probing the Lokayukta corruption scam, arrested a key suspect who was about to board a flight to Sri Lanka from the Chennai International Airport on Saturday.
The SIT arrested Krishna alias ‘Hotte’ Krishna against whom they had issued a lookout notice as he has was absconding after the arrest of his associates. Following the lookout notice, the immigration officials at the Chennai airport detained Krishna when he was about to board a flight to Colombo.
On being alerted, an SIT team from Bengaluru went to Chennai and formally arrested Krishna. He was brought to Bengaluru on Sunday and produced before the Lokayukta Special Court judge V G Bopaiah at his residence. Krishna has been remanded in police custody for six days.
According to SIT sources, Krishna has been arrested in the FIR (61/2015) registered on the basis of a complainant by Uday Shankar, who was a chief engineer at the Public Works Department (PWD), Magadi sub-division, Ramanagara district.
The Lokayukta police had taken up a suo motu case in 2012 on the irregularities in PWD works in the Magadi sub-division.
Uday Shankar had stated that he had paid Rs five lakh to Y Ashwin, son of Lokayukta Justice Y Bhaskar Rao, through Narasimha Murthy, a clerk at the State Police Headquarters and Bhaskar. The SIT has already arrested Ashwin, Bhaskar and Narasimha Murthy.
According to sources, Krishna is said to have started as a small-time real estate broker. Later he functioned as a tout at the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB), Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), Urban Development Department, among other government departments, handling land-related issues.
Subsequently, he developed contacts with some senior staff in the Lokayukta officials and became a part of the cartel that blackmailed public servants and extorted money from them.
