Vehicular movement at SRS Junction in Peenya on Tumakuru Road was disrupted for a while on Sunday morning as local residents and businessmen staged a flash protest following a road accident in which a boy was killed and his mother suffered injuries.

Vehicles were lined up in a long queue. The local police rushed to the spot, pacified the protesting public and controlled the situation. Normalcy on the busy road was restored some time after the protest was withdrawn, police said.

The protesters demanded a skywalk or a pedestrian subway at the junction to help the pedestrians cross the road safely.

“Three accidents have occurred at the junction in August, but the police and the local administration have not taken any measures to prevent the deaths on the road,” they said and demanded immediate pedestrian crossing facilities.

The accident took place at 8.45 am when Sunitha was riding a two-wheeler with her son Likhith Gowda as pillion to her brother’s house at Hesara-ghatta for a puja. Sunitha is married to Kumar, a supervisor at a factory in Peenya. Likhith was studying in Class 3 at a local school in Gayatri Nagar. The family stays in Gayatri Nagar, police said.

Sunitha took a right turn to avoid a pothole at the junction. A speeding private bus that was moving towards Nelamangala collided with the two-wheeler. Likhith was tossed up in the air, fell down and came under the front wheel of the bus.

The boy died on the spot due to massive injuries while Sunitha suffered injuries on her head and right hand, police said. The bus driver has been taken into custody.
