The police have arrested a civil contractor for lapses in maintaining a stretch of the Bengaluru-Pune National Highway in Peenya that led to the death of a woman and her son after a bus rammed their two-wheeler at SRS Junction on August 23.

According to the police, Sunitha, riding a scooter with her nine-year-old son Likhith Gowda on the pillion, swerved to the right to avoid a huge pothole, when a speeding private bus rammed the two-wheeler killing the boy on the spot. Sunitha, who had sustained grievous injuries, died on Friday.

They were both headed to her brother’s house at Hesaraghatta for a puja.“Preliminary inquiry revealed that the accident took place due to a pothole at the junction. We slapped a notice on the  National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) after the accident. In their reply, the NHAI authorities stated that the maintenance and repair of the stretch, where the accident occurred, was given to Navayug Engineering Company Limited and that Shailendra was the contactor. He had failed to ensure proper maintenance of the road and hence he was arrested,” a senior police officer said.

Shailendra has, however, obtained bail. The police had also arrested the bus driver, Thimmaraju, 33, a native of Madhugiri, and seized his vehicle, but he too managed to get bail and came out of jail recently.
